At the WCVA GOFOD3 national conference, Community Movement Cymru (CMC) hosted the “Vulture capitalism versus communities” session.
Selwyn Williams, Vice-Chair of CMC and representing Cwmni Bro Ffestiniog opened the session by highlighting how the current economy is not spreading wealth to all and the potential for communitisation as an alternative economic model.
Then various CMC members presented on how they see this model working within their communities. This was followed by a very lively discussion on an alternative economic model and also touched upon broader topics such as equality and diversity, health and well-being, practically utilising research, affordable housing and tackling poverty.
What shone through is that communities have the answers to the complex issues they face and there’s a wealth of expertise within those communities that can be pulled upon to scale those approaches across communities. Alongside practically delivering solutions discussion highlighted collectively influence policy as a movement will further empower communities.
Big thank-you to Sue Denham and Jessie Buchanan from Together for Change for co-ordinating the session. Jessie has creatively captured the discussion through animation (images attached).
